For weeks royal watchers have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the heir to the throne, and early this morning local time Kate Middleton was admitted to the hospital in London.
The baby will be the third in line for the throne behind his or her father Prince William and grandfather, Prince Charles.
Officials at royal residence Clarence House issued the following statement: "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge has been admitted to St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London in the early stages of labour. The Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge."
Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, will give birth in the same place that the late Princess Diana had her two sons, William and Harry.
When the baby finally arrives, a formal notice will be posted on an easel outside of Buckingham Palace, announcing the infant's weight and gender.
