"Pacific Rim" costume designers forgot to include an essential item in the film's robot costume, causing some problems for actor Charlie Hunnam who was unable to relieve himself while he was wearing it.

The "Sons of Anarchy" star had to plan his bathroom breaks well in advance because of the massive amount of time it took to put on and remove the complicated gear.

In the upcoming film, Hunnam plays the leader of a team of soldiers who pilot giant mechanical robots in a bid to save the world against an alien invasion. Wearing the robot suit was incredibly frustrating for several reasons.

Hunnam explained: "Wearing that suit created traction on my shoulder so it was like someone pushing down on me for 14 hours a day.

"It's ostensibly a porous wet suit that had a little bit of fortified plastic to represent the carbon armor. Each piece of it would get clipped on so it took about 30 minutes to put it on and about 15 minutes to take it off.

"The real problem for the first two weeks is everything gets done very, very quickly and they didn't ever think to put in a pee flap so you can imagine it takes 45 minutes to take on and off, so you really don't want to be taking it on and off all day. But it was really hot and I had to drink a lot of water so it was a problem."

Fortunately, designers eventually added a much-needed addition to the suit: "After a couple of weeks they gave me a pee flap so all was good!"

At the end of filming, director Guillermo del Toro considered giving Hunnam the suit as a gift, but the actor declined the offer. "There was some talk of keeping the suit but it would have just been burned immediately had they let me keep it so I thought someone else should have it. I was so sick of wearing that suit by the end of it!" he told WENN.

"Pacific Rim" opens in theaters July 12.
