Anne Hathaway's recent interview with "Allure" magazine gives us a peek into the unmitigated pressures of doing two radically different characters back to back.
Anne Hathaway's Catwoman will be making her debut in "The Dark Knight Rises" on July 20. Meanwhile, she's filming "Les Misérables," where as Fantine, she must go from looking healthy and happy to scrawny and near death.
Hathaway's description of the diet makes it sound pretty Miz. "I'm on day six of detox... this diet makes me break out, so I love that. Nothing like living on hummus and radishes and then being all like, 'And I got a pimple,'" she told "Allure."
The UK tabloid "The Mirror" described in detail earlier this spring how Hathaway would be required to lose "as much weight as possible" in 15 to 20 days for a certain scene because of "time constraints." Of course, this info came from a mysterious anonymous source, so let's take that two-apple-a-day diet rumor with a grain of salt.
Being Catwoman has its own source of pressure, too. Fans criticized the casting choice from the beginning, and her character's costumes have been picked apart detail by detail. She told "Allure" that her skintight costume was "a psychological terrorist… The suit, thoughts of my suit, changing my life so I would fit into that suit... It dominated my year. I went into the gym for ten months and didn't come out."
Yikes! Scarlett Johansson recently wrote a scathing response to all the media attention to how she fit into her "Avengers" costume, and that "it's reckless and dangerous for these publications to sell the story that these are acceptable ways to looking like a 'movie star.'"
Although male movie stars also go through radical body changes for roles -- most famously, Hathaway's "TDKR" costar Christian Bale -- that doesn't mean it's healthy, no matter how many doctors or nutritionists are involved. Let's hope that Hathaway gets a break from this madness after "Les Miz" wraps.
