Hilary Duff Talks About Her 'Mean Girl' Role On 'Community'
As a former child star, Hilary Duff has been in the spotlight for a big chunk of her life. After becoming a star on the Disney Channel show “Lizzie McGuire” and the subsequent movies, Duff has bounced between film roles and guest spots on TV shows including “Law & Order: SVU” and “Gossip Girl.”
For her guest performance on NBC’s “Community,” Duff got to try something a little bit different. “It was fun for me to get to play a mean girl because it is so different from anything I’ve done before,” the actress says. “Being the most popular girl at a community college is important to her. I thought that was really funny.”
Duff will appear on Thursday’s episode as Meghan, the leader of group of mean girls who make life miserable for Britta, Shirley and Annie. To get back at Meghan, the girls unleash Abed (Danny Pudi) who turns out to be the ultimate mean girl. “Danny Pudi’s character turns into kind of a robot,” Duff says. “And he comes up with the greatest insults. And he comes into my character’s clique and kind of puts her in her place.”
So, who was Duff’s favorite cast member to work with? “Definitely Ken Jeong [who plays Senor Chang]. He just goes above and beyond and I love the commitment he has for the role.” Duff mentions one point in filming where, after laughing so hard milk squirts out of his nose, Jeong improvises a line saying Meghan, Duff’s character, “looks just like Haylie Duff [Hilary’s sister].” The reference made the actress start laughing hysterically which ruined the take, but was worth it.
Is there a chance for a second appearance? “I would love to,” she says. “That’s the great thing about the show is they bring their guest stars back quite often. So if they wrote something more I would of course come back.” In addition to flexing her comedic skills, the show gave her a chance to show off a different side of herself. “It was fun. I haven’t really done anything where I got to be a bitch before. So it was exciting.”
