Mac The Movieguy's earliest memories of film consist of seeing a midnight release of The Flintstones, falling asleep in Batman, and making his friend see Tom and Jerry over some other random action movie. That has since transpired into a life of watching countless, thousands of films, and TV shows. He wrote his first reviews for a small town newspaper, Neosho Daily News, and later would write reviews for other bloggers on their now defunct websit

Box Office Predictions: Will 'Transcendence' Top The Weekend?

Box Office Predictions: Will 'Transcendence' Top The Weekend?
1) Rio 2- 25M Weekend, 77M Weekend

The fact is that animated features rarely dip 50% in their second weekend. Most only dip 35-40%. It’s likely that Rio 2 will attain that 1st place finish that eluded it last weekend, especially since most of the other kids films have left theatres at this point. Only Bears is direct competition, and it isn’t much competition. Unless Transcendence can overcome its awful reviews, Rio 2 looks to win this weekend. Lets face it, it’s Easter, and this is a perfect film to see on Easter Sunday with the kids.

2) Captain America 2- 20M Weekend, 193M Total

Box Office Predictions: 'Divergent' Set To Win Weekend Over 'Muppets'

Box Office Predictions: 'Divergent' Set To Win Weekend Over 'Mup
1) Divergent- 60M Weekend, 60M Total

Sure, it seems low, given how massive The Hunger Games was. But Divergent isn’t The Hunger Games, and it hasn’t been getting as good of reviews. I still feel like I’m lowballing it a tad, but almost every other figure I’ve seen for Divergent is below mine. I think the reviews are factoring in, and people don’t see any growth over the weekend, rather the potential for drops.

2) Muppets Most Wanted- 22M Weekend, 24M Total

Counter-programming. The last Muppets did well over Thanksgiving weekend, so the hope is that the sequel will do similar business. Ho...

CBS Renews A Ton Of Shows

3/13/2014 3:16pm EDT
The Good Wife
CBS issued renewals to NCIS, NCIS: LA, CSI, Criminal Minds, Person Of Interest, Elementary, Hawaii Five-O, Blue Bloods, The Good Wife, 2 Broke Girls, The Millers, Mom, Mike and Molly, Two and a Half Men, The Amazing Race, Survivor, Undercover Boss, 60 Minutes, and 48 Hours. Add to that the renewal of The Big Bang Theory, and CBS just renewed a whopping 20 shows.

Not being picked up, but still not cancelled, are The Mentalist, Intelligence, Hostages, and The Crazy Ones. I would definitely rule out Intelligence and Hostages. Both failed to grab huge audiences. I think The Mentalist will prob...

Box Office Predictions: 'Non-Stop' Track To No. 1

2/28/2014 12:20pm EST
1) Non-Stop- 30M Weekend, 30M Total

Non-Stop is definitely on track to dethrone The Lego Movie at the top spot. It even has a mediocre, not terrible RT score of 48%, which is almost on par with Neeson’s last February opening, Unknown. Unknown opened after Neeson had one Taken behind him. Now Neeson has become a 1st quarter superstar with films like Taken, Unknown, and The Grey all doing decent numbers. For this outing, he’s paired up with Julianne Moore, which gives him a solid #2 to bank off of. With the rest of the films in the marketplace doing kinda dismal box office, it’s hard to beli...

Box Office Predictions: ‘Robocop’ Or ‘Lego’?

Box Office Predictions: ‘Robocop’ Or ‘Lego’?
1) The Lego Movie- 47M Weekend, 126M Total

I’m predicting a decent drop for The Lego Movie, as the winter storm barraging the country seems to be affecting box office already. Many theatres in affected areas are closed, and some theatres will see limited attendance anyway as people don’t want to go outside. For those that do, I’m sure The Lego Movie will remain a top choice.

2) Robocop- 21M Weekend, 25M Total

Robocop won’t beat The Lego Movie. I know I made it seem like it might, but it won’t. Sorry. I wouldn’t have predicted it anyway, and then I saw the mid-week grosses (Robocop opened...

Weekend Box Office Predictions: Will 'I Frankenstein' Win?

Weekend Box Office Predictions: Will 'I Frankenstein' Win?
1) Ride Along- 25M Weekend, 77M Total

After opening to first place, a record setting first place by the way, last weekend, Ride Along should cool off a bit this weekend. Audiences seemed to be generally happy, even if critics weren’t. That should lead to a 45% drop this week to about 25M. It should easily be the #1 movie, unless I Frankenstein is a breakout hit.

2) I Frankenstein- 16M Weekend, 16M Total

Was not screened for critics. Not a good sign. Also, I honestly think this movie has been undermarketed. Aaron Eckhart is not a proven star. The only thing going for this film right now i...

Box Office Predictions: 'Frozen' Faces Off Against Oscar Expansions

Box Office Predictions: 'Frozen' Faces Off Against Oscar Expansi
1) Lone Survivor- 18M weekend, 18M total

Mark Wahlberg is a bit more of a bankable lead actor. I’m making a bold prediction here, and it is based off of both Wahlberg’s status, as well as several “like minded films” like The Grey and Act Of Valor that have opened well. Plus, Lone Survivor is based off a book, and a true-story. A pretty great per screen of 42K last weekend showed that there is interest in this film.

2) August Osage County- 14M weekend, 14M total

27K per screen last weekend, plus lead actresses Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep should help propel August Osage County to a soli...

Box Office Predictions: 'Hobbit' Vs. 'Anchorman' Vs. 'American Hustle'

12/20/2013 10:11am EST
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues
1) The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug- 35M Weekend, 126M Total

Even with an impending 50% drop, it looks as if The Hobbit is going to win the weekend, but Will Ferrell and company are putting up a big fight. Had Anchorman opened on Friday, the demand might have put it higher, but with a spread out 5 day weekend.

2) Anchorman 2- 30M Weekend, 45M Total

The hit comedy managed 8M on Wednesday, putting it on a fast track for a huge weekend, heading into an even bigger Christmas. The counter programming here is perfect, as it is really unlike everything else in the top 10. An Anchorman 3 seem...

Movie Review: 'Dallas Buyers Club'

12/16/2013 6:00pm EST
Dallas Buyers Club
I will admit, as of the time I’m writing this review, I haven’t quite seen every film of 2013. But as of this moment, I’ve seen 71 films, and Dallas Buyers Club is the best. Hands down. It’s such a beautiful character arc for McConaughey that you can’t ignore it, and the film itself is just heart wrenching enough, and inspirational enough, to make you stand up and cheer.

McConaughey is tasked with playing Ron Woodruff, a real-life cowboy, who contracts the HIV virus during the peak of the AIDS crisis, and when men like Ron Woodruff thought only gays could get HIV. Ron turns from being a l...

Box Office Predictions: 'The Hobbit' Headed For #1

12/13/2013 1:30pm EST
The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
1) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug- 78M Weekend, 78M Total

The general consensus was that the last Hobbit was not on par with the quality of the first Lord of the Rings trilogy. The first Hobbit opened to 86M, breaking a December record. The second should see a small-ish dip, due in part to the people who didn’t like the first enough to rush out and see the second. Plus, there’s a ton of competition.

2) A Madea Christmas- 24M Weekend, 24M Total

Good God. Tyler Perry and Madea are back for what some critics have called “the worst Tyler Perry movie ever.” (Roger Moore). However, that k...
