'Glee's Cory Monteith tribute led to the show's biggest ratings in over a year.

The hit musical comedy paid homage to its late leading actor - who died from "a mixed drug toxicity" consisting of heroin and alcohol in July - and the highly anticipated episode drew big numbers for US channel FOX, with 7.4 milion viewers tuning in last night (10.10.13).

The emotional show scored a 2.8 in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic, which marked its highest rating since September 2012.

The episode, titled 'The Quarterback', centred on the death of Cory's character Finn Hudson and featured a tear-jerking rendition of Bob Dylan's 'Make You Feel My Love', which was performed by the 31-year-old actor's girlfriend Lea Michele, who plays Rachel Berry in the show.

Stars including Rebel Wilson and 'The Newsroom' beauty Olivia Munn were among the viewers who tuned in and they shared their compliments about the moving broadcast.

Rebel wrote on Twitter: "My heart went out to all the GLEE family watching the Farewell to Finn tonight x (sic)"

Olivia said: "We should all give more hugs. #Glee"

Meanwhile, 'American Idol' winner Jordin Sparks admits she became overly emotional while watching the show.

She wrote: "This is such a touching tribute on Glee. I am bawling. #rememberingcory (sic)"
