A long-past-its-due relationship is the foundation of Girl's fifth episode, "Hard Being Easy," the first one to focus almost solely on Marnie's crumbling romance with Charlie. The two have had it hard since the pilot: She's ready to move on, but she can't seem to shake him. Because he's just so nice. He doesn't deserve it. He hasn't done anything wrong. You know, all of the excuses a person can make for not breaking up with someone.
After last week's diary fiasco, Charlie's finally the one taking charge. He knows Manrie doesn't love him the way she used to, and he'd rather end things befo...

Last night's episode of Game of Thrones, aptly titled "A Man Without Honor," was all about… well, men without honor. The title can be directly linked to Jaime Lannister, who made a reappearance after several episodes in the dark. Jaime murdered a young relative just to break free from Stark clutches. And he succeeded, albeit temporarily. See, for as calculating as the Lannisters are, even they can't master the art of escaping this inescapable, messy situation they've all found themselves in. Jaime's lack of honor may lend the episode its name, but it's a blanket term for almost every man on...

As this season of "Game of Thrones" hits its midpoint, we're finally knees-deep in a war so brutal and unflinching that nothing seems off-limits. Take for instance the opening scenes of this week's episode, which finds an almost hilariously inept Theon Greyjoy taking command of his former home. The unassuming people of Winterfell are invaded by Theon's skeleton crew, who sneak in and wreak havoc amongst a group of people who know him as the puny ward of their dead lord. When Theon rouses Bran from sleep to let him know he's infiltrated and is the new Lord of Winterfell, Bran practically yaw...

After three straight weeks of home runs, I really, really disliked the latest episode of "Girls."
Not that things have taken a dour 180. On the contrary, there's still plenty of hope nestled in the footnotes. It's a show with an impressive cast and characters with weight. I still cared about Marnie's happiness and Shoshanna's sexuality and even Charlie's bald head by the end. But the overwhelming excitement I got from the opening chapters fell quiet for this unimpressive half-hour, when broad commentary stood in for subtle discomfort.
As it goes, my favorite character in the first three e...

If there’s one thing “Game of Thrones” doesn’t do, is waste time. Last week’s episode closed with shots of sorceress Melisandre birthing some monstrous shadow, a wispy, manlike demon summoned for some mysterious bidding. This week’s episode, “The Ghost of Harrenhaal,” opened rather routinely: Catelyn and Renly were chatting about kingly things while Brienne helped Renly remove his armor. And then, with a fellow swoop, the shadow demon entered, stabbed Renly, and fled. All in the first five minutes.
The abruptness of the deed was cold, indeed. Brienne cried out in horror at the loss of her ...

The title of this week's episode of "Girls" refers to HPV. Not something you hear every day in TV land. As far as STDs go, HPV is less glamorous than HIV. Less shocking than the clap. It's a "chick problem," a disease passed among men, but for which no male test exists. And thus, it's a poisonous accusation. Hannah learns this the hard way at the beginning of "All Adventurous Women Do." She's just had raunchy sex with her weirdo boyfriend Adam (who is still mysteriously allergic to wearing shirts) when she gets a call from the clinic: she has HPV, and she's pretty sure Adam gave it to her. ...

If last night's episode of "Game of Thrones" doesn't get people talking, I don't know what will.
I'm sure dedicated book fans were expecting those final shots, when sorceress Melisandre gave birth to… a shadow baby? As a non-book reader, I'm murky on the details. But I do know that I finished this episode with an audible exhale of breath. Not only was it the most outwardly fantastical scene of the show so far (with the exception, perhaps, of Dany's dragons), but it was wrought with tension. I was expecting the birth of an illegitimate Stannis baby, after their steamy sex scene last week. W...

"Game of Thrones" is nothing if not expansive (understatement of the century). Characters who get the silent treatment for long drags of time have a tendency to crop up as soon as they’re forgotten. That reinsertion takes centerfold in this week’s installment, with Renly Baratheon’s quest for glory as the overarching storyline.
Like his brothers, Robert and Stannis, Renly is a noble man, a little too proud and a little too stubborn to assume the leadership role he so rightfully seeks. With bastard child Joffrey at reign, Westeros is in the thick of an ugly war, new enemies and allegiances...

It’s practically moot to bring up the taboo “female comedy” tag here. So I won’t. Instead, I’d like to talk about “Girls,” the new half-hour HBO comedy from ingénue Lena Dunham, as it deserves to be talked about: as the brutally real, and abhorrently funny, nugget of genius that it is.
If you haven’t heard of Lena Dunham yet, you’re due for an ear cleaning: Not only did she receive tremendous accolades for her directorial feature debut, “Tiny Furniture” (now available on Criterion and Netflix Instant Watch), but she’s been at the top of the Arts & Entertainment section for the past month ...

Jumping from a introduction-heavy episode into a thick plot, no pandering required, is one of 'Game of Thrones'' riskiest habits. It isn't about making sure everyone is on board. It's about throwing some names at the audience, hoping they stick, and moving on. If last night's episode, "The Night Lands," has one thing going for it, it's that it isolates the non-dedicated from the extremely invested, no questions asked.
The episode opens with Robert Baratheon's only living bastard son, Gendry, fleeing to the north with Arya and crew. He quickly learns, thanks to a band of Lannisters, that ...
