New 'HIMYM': Is Barney Robin's Baby's Father?
At the end of last episode HIMYM fans were left with the shocker revelation that Robin was pregnant. With a rerun last Monday, it gave two weeks for the rumor mill to churn up gossip. I reported on my blog that the most reliable sources said that Barney was not the father, it was Kevin. Half of that rumor turned out to be true.
As we return to the moment right after Robin revealed she was pregnant, we find out that she is a week late, and doesn’t actually know for sure. Barney points out that it could be Kevin’s, right? However, Robin claims that she and Kevin aren’t sleeping together.
Robin decides to schedule a doctor’s appointment, and Barney comes along. It turns out that Robin is not pregnant, and not only that, but she can’t have kids at all. The immediate relief of finding out she isn’t pregnant is swept away by the gravity of the second fact.
The fact of Robin not being pregnant kind of lessens the enormity of the shocker ending two weeks ago. On the week off I wrote a blog post of the “Top 5 HIMYM surprise endings,” and ranked it number two. After seeing how it played out, it would definitely drop a few notches.
I didn’t really care much for this episode. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe this was the first episode of the series that was not narrated by Bob Saget as older Ted. Instead, Robin takes over the narration role, claiming it is the story of “how I met your father.” The fact that she isn’t pregnant and the children aren’t real, just a figment of her imagination, makes the whole device pretty unsatisfying to me. There was also a side story with Marshall and a boy from their new neighborhood that I just found to be kind of annoying. I was hoping for a more ground breaking event in the ongoing story, but I guess we will have to wait at least a few more weeks for that.
HIMYM is off for Christmas break. If you haven't seen The Muppets, co-written by and starring HIMYM's Jason Segel yet I highly recommend it. The legend continues in the new year, Mondays at 8/7c on CBS.
