The movie Duplicity
starring Clive Owen
and Julia Roberts
hit theaters this weekend. In the film, Owen, a former MI-6 agent, and Roberts, a former CIA agent, work together on a project, but neither feels they can completely trust each other. The word duplicity means to conceal one's true intentions by deceptive words or actions, and the title seems very fitting. The release is sure to be one of the more popular movies of the spring, and it got Starpulse thinking about the best spy movies.
One of the most entertaing spy movies is Arnold Schwarzenegger
's True Lies
, where he plays a secret agent for the CIA. When his wife, played by Jamie Lee Curtis
, starts to figure out the truths to her husband's double life, the government makes her join their operations. This eventually leads Arnold and Jamie on a mission to track down nuclear warheads that have fallen into the wrong hands. When they are captured and held hostage behind enemy lines, they have to put their trust issues aside and work together to free themselves and stop the terrorist plot. This movie contains some great action scenes, including a part where Arnold lifts Jamie out of the sunroof of a limo that is speeding over the side of a broken bridge from inside of a helicopter. Whoa!
There have been some great comedic spy movies, like Get Smart
, Top Secret
, and The Man Who Knew Too Little
, but our favorite is Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
. Mike Myers
brought the 60's MI-6 agent to life in the 90s for the greatest spoof spy movie ever made. One of the best moments is when Dr. Evil begins to lower Austin into a pool filled with mutated seabass. Evil's son, played by Seth Green
, says, "Hey Dad, I've got a gun in my room. We can shoot him together!" Dr Evil replies, "You just don't get it do you? I have to put him in a highly elaborate and easily escapable situation, then without watching to see if it works I'll just assume everything has gone to plan."
The 2006 movie The Good Shepherd
looked into the origin of the CIA. The star-studded cast included Matt Damon
, Angelina Jolie
, Alec Baldwin
, Robert De Niro
, Billy Crudup
, Timothy Hutton
, Joe Pesci
, and John Turturro
. Damon plays Edward Wilson, an FBI agent who would become one of the first spies for the CIA. The movie is filled with high drama and examines many of the mysterious aspects of the world of intelligence.
Ian Fleming's James Bond is without a doubt the most famous character in spy fiction. Daniel Craig
has revitalized the franchise with his portrayal of Bond in Casino Royale
and Quantum of Solace
. Pierce Brosnan
, Roger Moore
, Timothy Dalton
, and George Lazenby
have also played the man with the license to kill. However, none have done it as well as the original Bond, Sean Connery
. Our favorite Bond film is the 1964 movie Goldfinger
. Bond foils the plot of a gold smuggler to set off a nuclear device in Fort Knox. Bond movies are known for their beautiful women with suggestive names, and James certainly could not have defeated Goldfinger without the help of Pussy Galore and her flying circus. The sorority of Bond girls contains a little something for everybody, but the gorgeous Eva Green
from "Casino Royale" is our current favorite.
Every red-blooded American man loves a Bond movie, but our favorite spy movie of all time is the 2002 thriller The Bourne Identity
. There is just nothing like the Bourne movies. They keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Matt Damon
stars as Jason Bourne. At the beginning of the movie, Jason wakes up on a ship in the middle of the ocean with no memory of his past. It is clear that he has incredible abilities and goes on a mission to find out his true identity and past. He is running from his own government, who believes he is rogue and now views him as a threat. Jason offers a woman $20,000 to help him escape. Without the help of Marie, played by Franka Potente
, Jason would never have escaped to Paris. The two work together to help each other find themselves and live one of the best love stories in the spy genre. The chase scenes, espionage, action, and drama of the Bourne movies are unmatched by any other spy film.
