Katy Perry was an early winner at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, landing the Moonman trophy for her "Dark Horse" video, which features rapper Juicy J.

Katy beat out strong competition from Ariana Grande, Beyonce, Iggy Azalea and Lorde to take home the prize.

"Wow, it's a nice way to start out the night with a Moonman... We just want to say thank you so much, we put a lot of time and effort and hard work into this song. We are going to party tonight."

Everyone in the house partied all night as the ceremony kicked off by a rousing trio of songs from Grande, Nicki Minaj and Jessie J.

Grande started things off with a performance of her hit "Break Free," during which Minaj joined in as the song changed to her latest hit, "Anaconda," while Jessie J joined in to perform her new single "Bang Bang," which features both Grande and Minaj. The official video for the song premiered on MTV.com shortly after the performance.

Producers of the show seemed to avoid any big controversies this year, although Minaj did suffer a wardrobe malfunction off-stage and had to hold her outfit shut with one hand during the end of the performance.

Newcomers Fifth Harmony surprised the crowd with their win for Artist to Watch, besting 5 Seconds of Summer, Charli XCX, Sam Smith and Schoolboy Q; while Lorde took the Best Rock Video trophy for "Royals," besting the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Black Keys, Imagine Dragons and Linkin Park in the night's Jethro Tull moment.

Beyonce wrapped things up with a medley of all the songs on her eponymous album, which came out in December, before accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award from husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy. She also picked up Moonmen for Best Collaboration (with husband Jay-Z on "Drunk In Love") and Best Video With A Social Message and Best Cinematography for "Pretty Hurts."
