Neil Patrick Harris made his debut in Broadway's rock musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" on Monday night and critics are raving about hsi performance.

The actor plays a transgender German singer in the show, which was attended by a number of stars including Amanda Seyfried, Christina Hendricks and husband Geoffrey Arend, Same Rockwell, Justin Long, Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour and Harris' partner David Burtka.

"Harris is beyond fabulous, holds nothing back and plays it any way but safe in Michael Mayer's exhilarating production," says The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney; while New York Times critic Ben Brantley says, "Harris is in full command of who he is and, most excitingly, what he has become with this performance. That's a bona fide Broadway star, the kind who can rule an audience with the blink of a sequined eyelid."

"Rarely does a role fit a performer so well," wrote AP writer Mark Kennedy. "Harris is funny, twisted, poignant, outrageous, bizarre, silly and very, very human."

Kennedy added that NPH "simply crushes it" in his review.

During the show a woman shouted out, "I love you, Neil!" after which the actor, while remaining in character, replied, "I'm doing something up here... motherf***er!"

The audience applauded the move, but a spokesperson for the actor explained to website Gossip Cop that it was all in good fun, and Harris even improvised by asking his castmates, "Who's Neil?"

The original 1998 off-Broadway production was made into a film in 2001.
