Divergent, the movie adaptation of Veronica Roth's young adult novel of the same name, has garnered the second biggest opening weekend of the year, raking in a whopping $56 million and nearly burying this weekend's other big debut, Muppets Most Wanted.

Disney's "The Muppets" sequel opened to a weak $16.5 million in ticket sales, a little more than half what its 2011 predecessor pulled in.

The animated "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" dropped to third after a second place debut two weeks ago and taking the top spot last week, taking in $11.7 million.

"300: Rise of an Empire," last week's number-two film, slips to fourth with just $8.6 million in sales, while religious film "God's Not Dead" cracked the top five with $8.5 million.
