Lee Daniels' The Butler held off competition from boy band One Direction's concert movie, One Direction: This Is Us, to top the four day Labor Day weekend box office.

"The Butler" grossed $20 million, edging out director Morgan Spurlock's music documentary, which came in second at $18 million.

"This Is Us" did win the weekend box office, though, pulling in $1 million more than "The Butler" for a $15.8 million take.

Comedy We're the Millers finished third on both charts, taking in nearly $16 million for the holiday weekend, and $12.6 million over the three-day weekend.

But the big surprise was Spanish-language film "Instructions Not Included", which snuck into the top five with a four-day total of $10 million.

The comedy, which debuted in only 347 theaters across the U.S., marks the best opening ever for Pentelion Films, a collaboration between Lionsgate and Mexican film company Grupo Televisa.

“This is the biggest star you’ve never heard of,” Pantelion CEO Paul Presburger told the L.A. Times of the film's star, Eugenio Derbez. "He’s beloved in Mexico, but also beloved here with the Latino audience. People say he’s like Jim Carrey because he’s a physical actor.”
