Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has given his support to fugitive Edward Snowden, who leaked information about secret surveillance operations that the U.S. and U.K. governments used to spy on their own people.

Snowden, a former CIA agent and technical contractor, has been on the run after blowing the whistle on the government's handling of phone and internet records of private citizens. He had been seeking asylum in Hong Kong before leaving the Chinese-governed city-state on Sunday and is rumored to be headed to Ecuador.

Morello has spoken out, calling Snowden a "hero" and offering financial assistance to the expatriate.

TMZ.com caught up with the politically-outspoken guitarist and asked his opinion on the matter.

"I think he should live a happy life in Ecuador. That's what I think. I think he's a hero," Morello said. "He exposed the crimes of the government. We're all being spied on all the time by the Obama administration. If anybody deserves to be in jail, it's not Snowden."

Snowden was charged by the U.S. with felonies under the Espionage Act and asked authorities in Hong Kong to arrest him. He sought asylum there, but his lawyers suggested he look elsewhere, saying the process could take years and involve detaining him in the mean time, according to Reuters.

Snowden left Hong Kong Sunday and went to Moscow, after which he is rumored to have flown to Cuba and will try to get to Ecuador, where he's applied for asylum, along with Iceland.

"Today I got an email from the Obama campaign asking for money, after they have been spying on me and their drones have been killing civilians," an angry Morello added. "So I decided I'm going to take whatever amount of money that I might have donated - which would have been not that much - and I'm going to donate to whatever airplane flight is going to get Snowden to Ecuador, whatever fund that is. I'd be happy to."
