Pop star couple Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were photographed backstage at a Phish concert at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California Wednesday night -- news that has taken the jam band community by storm!
Bieber was at the show with Dan Kanter, who serves as his musical director and lead guitarist and is a big fan of bands like Phish, the Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Kanter has seen the Vermont-based jam band over 60 times and took Justin along with him this time. Website Jambands.com got a hold of Kanter this week after news that one of the world's biggest pop stars was at the show; and he revealed that Justin is actually very interested in the band.
"Justin obviously knew about me and my wife's obsession with Phish since we met," Kanter tells Jambands.com. "He's very fascinated. I would show him videos of things, and we would just talk about it and he was very fascinated by the whole world and how they're so big that they can sell out the Garden four nights in a row, but they don't really have videos or radio play... it's just such an opposite world than what he lives in that he's quite fascinated by it.
"And also," he adds, "Justin is quite spontaneous for someone that people sort of expect is a typical pop star."
After the show Bieber tweeted, "GREAT SHOW last night #withdankanter. @dankanter @phish". He and Selena were reportedly only expected to stay until the break between the band's two sets, but ended up staying for about 3/4 of the entire show.
Twitter user tweezburger (a play on the band's song "Tweezer") posted the image, which was shot by longtime band manager Brad Sands; with the message, "biebz backstage at #phish - phot by brad sands."
A couple of other amusing tweets included Miss Hillzy's, "For the love of god @justinbieber - tweet that you're at a Phish show and open your fans eyes"; and "a Phish show is probably the one place in the world Justin Bieber doesn't need bodyguards cc @dankanter :)". User '@scrappy' posted, "all the @phish phans better be careful, BieberPhever spreads like wild fire!"
Even Kanter posted a tweet afterward, promising that this wasn't the only time Justin would be spotted at a Phish concert.
"So much Phun :) First of many!" he wrote.
So now can we expect Justin's hits to include endless jams? Only time will tell.
