R. Kelly

R. Kelly faced an angry crowd during a club event in Texas last weekend after he refused to perform for fans who were expecting to see a full concert by the singer.

The "I Believe I Can Fly" hitmaker was booked to appear at The Mansion in Austin on Saturday for a bash billed as "An Intimate Night With R. Kelly", but devotees who had paid $30 to attend the gig were surprised when the R&B star turned up late and walked through the venue, straight to the VIP area.

He picked up a microphone moments later, while still in the cordoned-off area and partly hidden from view, and belted out a rendition of his hit "Ignition (Remix)" and an a cappella version of "Bump N' Grind", before stepping away from the spotlight to enjoy the rest of the party.

Audience members booed and jeered the singer, prompting the event promoter to take the stage and explain that the party was simply being "hosted" by Kelly - and that he wasn't going to play a full set.

The excuse wasn't enough for rowdy fans and Kelly was forced to step onstage to calm the crowd, insisting he "wasn't contractually obligated to sing", according to austin360.com.

Kelly later posed for photos with fans as he made his exit.
