I'm an experienced Entertainment blogger. I especially enjoy reviews, recaps, obituaries, features and news stories. I've been more interested in TV of late because movies haven't excited me much. But, I'm a big movie buff, an avid Hitchcock fan and an Oscar watcher. I have a big Oscar pool and party (not pool party) every year. I work in the publishing industry in the Twin Cities.

TV Ratings: Golden Globes Shine, CBS Shows See Series Highs

1/18/2013 9:45am EST
Golden Globe Awards
It was quite a ratings week. CBS dominated overall with an impressive average of nearly 13.3 million viewers. FOX handily won the week’s top program, the Packers/49ers game, with 30.9 million viewers. Still, that was the network’s lone bright spot. No wonder they’re heavily promoting ‘American Idol’’s “fued” between the judges.

CBS’ success for the week was largely driven by its top two scripted shows: ‘NCIS’ and ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ which hit another series high last week. It marked the first time in nearly six years that a network managed to net more than 20 million viewers from two sc...

'Modern Family' Recap: New Year's Eve

1/11/2013 5:57pm EST
'Modern Family'
It’s refreshing to see a sitcom episode centered around New Year’s Eve rather than other holidays, no? The Pritchetts’ New Year’s trip makes for a satisfying premise in ‘New Year’s Eve.’

Jay decides that he’d like to treat Gloria and the kids to a getaway in Palm Springs. Unfortunately, the accommodations at the hotel Jay stayed at back in the 70s aren’t quite what he remembered. (And who would picture a drinking Lainie Kazan behind the check-in counter?)

Aside from the disappointing accommodations, what drives the plot is that the couples are tired of spending time with each other as a f...

TV Ratings: 'Big Bang' Scores Series High, 'Downton Abbey' Stuns

1/10/2013 7:52pm EST
'Downton Abbey'
NBC is on a winning streak, but mostly thanks to the Vikings and Packers. That game scored over 30 million viewers over the weekend, prompting the Peacock network to nab a rare win, its third in as many weeks. That record isn’t likely to last, especially since ‘American Idol’ is on the horizon for FOX.

Other big ratings news centers around CBS’ ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ which hit a series-high 19.25 million viewers last week.  The TBS repeats probably only help the show’s cause, and with little competition last Thursday, the show blew other programs out of the water.

And let’s not forget ‘Do...

TV Ratings: 'Twas The Week Before Christmas

12/28/2012 9:33am EST
'How I Met Your Mother'
NBC and CBS both did well in the ratings the week leading up to Christmas. NBC claimed the #2 spot with ‘Sunday Night Football,’ while two editions of ‘The Voice,’ including the season finale, ranked in the top 10 with 14.1 and 13.4 million viewers, respectively. Its White House Christmas special also ranked in the top 20.

ABC didn’t place a show in the top 20, while FOX’s ‘The X Factor’ continues to struggle. Its second-season finale was down 23 percent from last year and finished 18th for the week.

CBS seems practically invincible with its lineup. It’s one of the few networks to do well...

'Modern Family' Recap: 'Diamond In The Rough'

12/14/2012 10:55am EST
Modern Family
In “Diamond in the Rough,” Claire and Cam decide to help construct a baseball field so that Manny and Luke’s team can participate in the playoffs. It’s all very sweet, but it would help if Manny didn’t close his eyes while at bat or round the bases in the wrong direction. Oh well.

Back at Gloria and Jay’s, the mother-to-be has taken to singing to the baby through a strapped-on microphone. Unfortunately, she has no idea how terrible her singing voice is. Jay does, however. ("Papa'd buy 10 diamond rings to get that mockingbird to shut the hell up. But I wasn't gonna tell Gloria she was a ter...

TV Ratings: ABC Struggles In Repeat Week

12/14/2012 9:32am EST
'Grey's Anatomy'
ABC had a rough go of it in the ratings last week, with repeats of shows like ‘Modern Family’ and no new ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ The network placed behind FOX with 5.69 million viewers. That’s saying a lot since FOX continued to struggle, buoyed only by football and ‘The X Factor.’ ABC's highest-rated show was 'Grey's Anatomy.'

CBS, meanwhile, continued its domination, averaging 9.36 million viewers. It placed 14 of its programs in the Top 20. NBC, meanwhile, won the 18-49 demo yet again and had the week’s top show, ‘Sunday Night Football,’ which may very well end the season at #1. The P...

TV Ratings: CBS Hits Season Highs

12/6/2012 9:37am EST
'Mike & Molly'
CBS continued its domination this TV season last week, winning for the eighth time in 10 weeks. It even hit season highs for several series, including ‘Mike & Molly’ and ‘The Amazing Race.’ The network’s ‘NCIS’ and ‘The Big Bang Theory’ attracted 19.76 million and 17.25 million viewers, respectively, good for 2nd and 3rd place.

1st place was claimed by NBC’s ‘Sunday Night Football.’ While that was the network’s only Top 20 entry besides ‘The Voice,’ it tied CBS for the 18-49 demo win, continuing a surprising streak this season.

ABC, meanwhile, settled for second place among total viewers,...

'Modern Family' Recap: 'When A Tree Falls' And Cam's Catsuit

11/29/2012 7:56pm EST
'Modern Family'
In “When a Tree Falls,” we’re treated to the sight of Cam, dressed as a cat, being lured from a tree by the fire department. Yep, they went there, but it’s even more (hilariously) ridiculous than it sounds. Mitchell and Cam campaign to save a tree that is dear to their hearts (they named it “Treeona Elmsley”) when they discover it’s about to be torn down.

Cam, who’s called in as an understudy in a production of ‘Cats,’ must continue their protest when responding to Mitchell’s plea. The sight of Cam in a ‘Cats’ suit and makeup: Priceless.

Claire, meanwhile, agrees to chaperone Gloria at Co...

TV Ratings: 'Liz & Dick' Fails To Impress

11/29/2012 8:48am EST
'Liz & Dick'
A rather slow holiday week was dominated by football. NBC claimed the two top spots with games, and also did well with ‘The Voice.’ CBS, meanwhile, relied on stalwarts like ‘NCIS,’ ’60 Minutes’ and ‘Survivor.’ ABC registered with ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and ‘Castle,’ while FOX didn’t even place a program in the Top 20.

It was a little more interesting over on cable. ‘iCarly’ bade goodbye with 6.4 million viewers – not a series-high, but still quite respectable. Lindsey Lohan didn’t have much to brag about, however. In addition to getting scathing reviews for ‘Liz & Dick’ (or perhaps becau...

TV Ratings: CBS Wins Big Week, But NBC Tops Sweeps

11/22/2012 10:25am EST
'The Big Bang Theory'
CBS handily won the week, hitting a series-high with ‘The Bing Bang Theory,’ but NBC is poised to claim the November sweeps crown among viewers 18-49.

The Eye Network had 11 of the top 20 shows, topped by ‘Big Bang,’ with over 17 million viewers, good for second place behind ‘Sunday Night Football.’ ‘Two and a Half Men,’ ‘NCIS,’ ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ and ‘Person of Interest’ also placed strongly in the Top 10.

For the week, FOX struggled, and ABC was buoyed only by ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ NBC, which did fine with football and ‘The Voice,’ surprised even itself by nabbi...
