David HasselhoffDavid Hasselhoff has tweeted his shock after a store clerk in Connecticut was critically injured as he attempted to thwart the theft of two cardboard cut-outs featuring the renowned actor.

On Tuesday, a 36 year old clerk was working at a branch of Cumberland Farms in Shelton, when a man got out of a black SUV and attempted to take down two advertising signs featuring Hasselhoff from a light pole, which were part of his advertising campaign for an iced coffee drink.

The employee was struck by the vehicle, flipped backwards and landed on his head and was dragged along the ground as it drove away and was admitted to Bridgeport Hospital in a critical condition.

Hasselhoff has now reached out to the unnamed victim and expressed his disbelief over the shocking incident.

In a series of posts on Twitter, the Baywatch star writes, "I am shocked & truly saddened about the Cumberland Farms store clerk tragedy. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with him and his family!... Words cannot express how I feel at this moment please take a moment to say a prayer that he makes a full recovery!! Thank you... David."

The authorities have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses to come forward. In 2012, more than 500 cardboard cutouts featuring Hasselhoff were stolen from Cumberland Farms stores in New England and Florida
