The Speidi Sham

SpeidiWe can all agree that there is a general feeling of disgust and outrage when it comes to Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt. It would be supremely difficult to find anyone who feels otherwise. We hate Spencer because of his idiocy, pettiness, and his absolutely roundabout logic that always seems to absolve him of any fault when he does something douchy (everyday). Any grown man who berates his sister to the point of tears when he is clearly in the wrong and then says that she is making herself cry "thinking about what she did" (nothing) certainly cannot be hailed as rational. We hate Heidi because although she shows that she has a bit more sense than Spencer, she still follows his lead and sides with him even when his wrongdoing is obvious. This makes her ultimately look like the bigger idiot.

But we spend so much time hating these two (check out these tweets in response to their recent Larry King appearance,) is this all real? Can Spencer really, as a grown man, act so unabashedly like a seventh grade girl? Does he enjoy schoolgirl drama that much? And can Heidi really be okay with his infantile behavior? I say no. Recently, a fellow Starpulse contributor wrote a piece airing out her frustrations and criticisms of the two. Though she makes many valid points, I think she's just another casualty of the Speidi sham. Heidi and Spencer have mastered the art of being villainous and annoying. We sometimes forget how painfully scripted The Hills is, and rule out the possibility that what we see of Heidi and Spencer on the show is all a performance. Any public appearance they make or interview they take is just another opportunity for them to put on a show. No matter where they are, they are the bad guys; the dreaded, abominable couple, and that is what keeps them in the public eye. That (and the trust funds from mommy and daddy) is what pays their bills. The more ridiculous their behavior, the more screen time they get, the more they appear in the tabloids.

Many other celebrities play this same game for ratings and promotion. Ann Coulter, the bleating wingnut is a perfect example of this. The hatred she's spewed out against 9/11 widows, for example, CANNOT be real. She says these things for shock value to sell her books and to get more television appearances. Perez Hilton is another one. He says ridiculous things so he can get more hits on his website. The more hateful the comment, the more crude the graffiti on celebrity photos, the more exposure he gets. It's a vicious cycle. Of course, maybe I have too much faith in humankind. Maybe it's a bit naive of me to not believe that anyone can be as stupid, petty, and shameless and Heidi and Spencer. But if they actually are as terrible as they seem, then maybe they really DO need Jesus.
