Enemy

The Flick: What starts as a fascinating tale of a man who finds and researches someone who is his exact physical double eventually delves into Lynch like territory but with none of the charm and style.  Jake Gyllenhaal does a credible job playing two slightly different characters and his female counterparts – the stunning Sarah Gadon and quietly cool Melanie Laurant – are good as well, but Director Denis Villeneuve gets so bogged down with symbolism and being clever that the film eventually flops.  Not to mention that it has an atrocious ending that makes Jennifer Lynch’s finale on "Boxing Helena" feel satisfying by comparison.  Good initial intentions, but the enemy of this flick is losing it’s way.

Best Feature: 'Lucid Dreams: The Making of Enemy' has all involved speculating on what the film is about and what is real.  Lynch lady Isabella Rossellini says it best when she proclaims that filmgoers should be ‘fascinated and repelled’ – check mark on both accounts.

Best Hidden Gem: Isabella Rossellini gives the film some wizard of weird credibility with her past work with auteur David Lynch and solid role here as Gyllenhaal’s skeptical mom.

Worth the Moola: Can I recommend a flick that’s interesting but pulls the rug out from underneath the viewer – probably not.
