Ready to join the gang for a little fun, murder and general mayhem?  Them follow us as we check out the new film "Ritual" out Dec. 31 on DVD from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.  The running and killing gets reviewed below!

Ritual DVD

   Title: "Ritual"

   Grade: 3

Cast: Lisa Summerscales, Dean Cates, Derek Phillips

   Director: Mickey Keating

   Rating: R

   Runtime: 89 minutes

   Release Company: Lionsgate Home Entertainment

The Flick: There’s both good and bad within the horror outing "Ritual."  On the bad side the story within Ritual feels less like a satanic clan out to perform a regular sick event and more like a watered down version of The Strangers.  (Right down to the very familiar lead couple in trouble on the outs in their floundering relationship - unoriginality alert!)  But on the good side writer/director Mickey Keating has amazing visual flair, particularly when he meshes his dark and gloomy motel hell stuff with some very Coen Bros.-esk beach shots of our couple in peril meeting for the first time.  He certainly has a knack for mixing genres and adding suspense – he just needs a more original script.

Best Feature: Sadly there is not a one feature on this release – I really would have liked a commentary track from Keating explaining some of his fresh style choices.

Best Hidden Gem: I dug the work by lead gal Lisa Summerscales, especially playing retro in those stark beach scenes.

Worth the Moola: Seeing the potential of a new director with flair is always cool, but the story here is in total familiar territory.
