Grade: 3 1/2
Cast: Voices of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck
Director: Sam Fell & Chris Butler
Runtime: 93 minutes
Release Company: Universal Home Entertainment
The Flick: "ParaNorman" actually starts off much more engaging then any kid flick of late, but eventually gets bogged down with too many gimmicks and lessons to teach. It does incorporate the whole undead/zombie aspect in a clever kid friendly way and has some memorable side characters (Casey Affleck’s dim brother is a work of art!), but when the undead begin to wreak havoc it does get a tad overwrought. Not to mention that the final act has the vibe of a bad Afterschool Special, but overall there’s enough fun and frights to keep even the undead wide awake. (And in 3D for those who have the ability it does provide some in-your-face undead fun!)
Best Feature: Even if the flick isn’t five-star, the attached extras most certainly are. Especially in the form of a massive 9-part doc that covers everything from the actors and their voices to building amazing sets and even constructing the characters themselves. (The small Norman’s hair is goat hair that’s been died!) It gave me way more respect for everyone involved...and it’s a cool watch to boot.
Best Hidden Gem: Again, the drawl low-key cadence that usually makes Casey Affleck annoying is put to perfect use here voicing a dense buff dim bulb – funny stuff.
Worth the Moola: Thoughtful, creative, though with a flawed third act, "ParaNorman" nevertheless will keep everyone entertained.
