Nicole Kidman DVD

Title: "Cold Mountain"

Grade: 4

Cast: Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger

Director: Anthony Minghella

Rating: R

Runtime: 154 minutes

Release Company: Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Website: www.lionsgatedvd.com

The Flick: Not all due to Kidman (Zellweger is the stand-out here!), she nevertheless plays a decent part as half of a weary long-distance love affair with MIA soldier Jude Law.  Good chemistry between the two (even though they don't share the screen much here!) and there's a decent epic feel thanks to Director Anthony Minghella makes this cold mountain a hot spot.

Title: "The Others"

Grade: 3 1/2

Cast: Nicole Kidman, Fionnula Flanagan, Christopher Eccleston

Director: Alejandro Amenabar

Rating: PG-13

Runtime: 104 minutes

Release Company: Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Website: www.lionsgatedvd.com

The Flick: Cool direction by filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar, some clever twists and an inspired cold performance by a controlled Kidman makes "The Others" well worth checking out.  (Think "The Sixth Sense" meets the period piece!)  There's just a decent slow and calculated pace that holds attention, even in the midst of some daft moments.

Title: "Rabbit Hole"

Grade: 2

Cast: Nicole Kidman, Aaron Eckhart, Dianne Wiest

Director: John Cameron Mitchell

Rating: PG-13

Runtime: 92 minutes

Release Company: Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Website: www.lionsgatedvd.com

The Flick: The problem with "Rabbit Hole" is not the highly affecting acting and decent drama, it’s just so choked full of unfun subject matter that viewing more than once would be equal to torture.  We feel the pain of parents Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart – but once is more then enough.

Title: "Dogville"

Grade: 1

Cast: Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany, Stellan Skarsgard

Director: Lars von Trier

Rating: R

Runtime: 177 minutes

Release Company: Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Website: www.lionsgatedvd.com

The Flick: Not really a fan of the stage on film setting of the Von Trier films in this series, I just wasn’t riveted by the characters enough to ignore the crass non-set display.  Plus things within go from nice to nasty quick and makes this von Trier outing a hard watch.  (For a more thorough but equally harsh Lars experience see "Antichrist!")

Worth the Moola: With missing items like "Dead Calm" (her best!) and "To Die For," this one is a hard to recommend set – you have to really dig the Kidman for this purchase!
