How well does a best selling novel about the difficulties of juggling work and home for women translate to the big screen? The Flick: Granted I never read the book upon which this film is based, but it’s translation on the big screen is not so good. With a ton of unneeded asides, comments badly addressed right to the camera and even a visual gimmick of actually listing our lead characters items (much like in, say, a book!), shows why sometimes a page turner doesn’t always equal blockbuster burner. Not to mention that Sarah Jessica Parker is totally unlikable, normally amazing Christina Hendricks utterly wasted (the reality based conversations she has to the camera are so badly beneath her!) and the men here are either power hungry (Brosnan – big surprise!) or powerless (Greg Kinnear – again big surprise!). What’s even funnier then the film itself is a comment made by my girl who while watching this with me proclaimed to know exactly how she does it – she has a nanny.
Best Feature: There’s only one feature here in the form of a 'Conversation with Allison Pearson,' who does mention that her character in the novel came from a poor background – that one might have made Parker’s upper middle class working girl a little more relatable to the regular folk!
Best Hidden Gem: I did get a bit of a kick out of Olivia Munn’s stoic associate assistant with a fear of family – but even that one gets old fast!
Worth the Moola: I dare say this one is not for me, but my gal claimed to have hated it as well – though it is the first thing we’ve agreed on in years. (Hey, maybe this one does serve a purpose - thanks "I Don’t Know How She Does It!")
