The Presence

An isolated cabin.  No electricity.  Light by single candle.  And Mira Sorvino.  It sounds like a beautiful dream I had the other night, but it’s actually a new ghost story out on DVD this week from Lionsgate called “The Presence”.  Light is shed below!

The Flick: "The Presence" definitely has its creepy heart in the right place, but all the elements just don’t come together in the end.  On the up side there is an eerie mood and tone set by Director Tom Provost, some seriously decent cinematography and leading lady Mira Sorvino (an amazing actress who deserves to be working much more!) gives depth to the material.  On the downside is the daft looking Shane West as a gawking and goofy ghost that plagues the house Sorvino is in (and no, his face does not convey emotions – just stupidity!), plus there’s a whopping whole first act that plays out with no dialogue whatsoever.  (It could have been a good device – West makes it unbearable!)  Not to mention that the scares come way too late in the piece, there are WAY too many fades to black (this should always be used very liberally guys!) and Sorvino’s boyfriend Justin Kirk is so annoying that we’re hoping he gets swallowed up by some evil presence.  Too much bad, not enough good.

Best Feature: The 'Making Of' has some nice insight via the very cool Sorvino – keep working girl!

Best Hidden Gem: Have to say the lush and then barren cinematography by DOP Collin Brink is awesome – he needs a better flick!

Worth the Moola: On the sheer need to see Sorvino, for me the juice is worth the squeeze.  But as a stand-alone flick, no need to make your viewing presence known.
