'Girls' And 'Veep' Renewed For Second Seasons: What's In Store?
HBO has quickly renewed their latest hit comedies “Girls” and “Veep” for a second season. What’s in store for the 20-somethings of “Girls” and vice president Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus)? There’s still a fruitful first season to get through.
“Girls” creator/star Lena Dunham said you’ll see many more embarrassing sexual mistakes for her character Hannah and all the girls. “They’re trying their hardest and they make mistakes, but they are working towards something,” Dunham said. “It’s a two steps forward one step back situation. They do need to grow up. That’s what the show is about. It’s about that sort of effort to change.”
Hannah in particular has already contracted HPV and found out her previous ex is gay. Her parents are cutting her off financially so she’ll have to make more decisions on her own. “You could place two decisions in front of her and someone could be like, ‘That is the right choice, this is the wrong choice. That one leads to delicious candy and bunnies and that one is you in a fire’ and she would be like, ‘What?’ She has no clue.”
Meanwhile, V.P. Meyer is trying to do right by her president and make a political name for herself too. “There’s a lot of disappointment and at the same time there are moments of glory,” Louis-Dreyfus said. “Shall we say they’re not long lasting moments. In Washington there are so many people doing the wrong thing for the right reasons and the right things for the wrong reasons. It sort of speaks to that middle area.”
So far we’ve seen Meyer deal with giving speeches and fundraisers, and handle the media. We should also expect to see how she handles her children while in office. “Because Selina is a mother I was very interested to hear what it’s like raising children under those circumstances, the kind of privacy and the moments you might have with your child or children which other people are privy to,” Louis-Dreyfus said. “All of a sudden very private moments are public with chiefs of staff and Secret Service, yet one must have those private moments anyway. How does that work? That was particularly interesting to me since we’re playing Selina as a mom.”
“Girls” and “Veep” air Sunday nights on HBO.
