A Down To Earth Jennifer Lawrence Talks 'The Hunger Games' And All The Hype

Q: What qualities of Katniss did you enjoy playing the most?
JL: I think just what she was. I admire her. She's a leader. She's a warrior. She's Joan of Arc. She's this brave girl that gets shoved into this horrifying situation and not only comes out on top, but sparks an uprising. Not only wins, but she changes the game. She not only beats their game, she changes it. I thought that was, what an incredible girl.
Q: How did you prepare both mentally and physically for a role like this?
JL: Physically it was a lot of training: running, free running which is like agility, combat, climbing, archery, and yoga. And then emotionally, I don’t really emotionally prepare for anything, except going to the mall last night for the signing. But that’s just showing up to set with your lines memorized and just talking, I didn’t really emotionally prepare too much.
Q: Was there one scene that was the most difficult to get through?
JL: No, the difficult scenes were always the physical ones because of the heat. Running through the Cornucopia in the middle of the movie to get the backpack, it was over like 105 degrees that day and there was no shade anywhere, and I’m in full jacket, pants, sprinting ten, fifteen times all day. It was brutal.
Q: How comfortable were you climbing up in the trees?
JL: I love trees. It was good. It was great. The worst part about tree-climbing is the spiders, my biggest fear. I mean, we had bears, we had wolves, snakes, poison ivy, everything. Nothing got to me as much as spiders. And like Daddy Longlegs, it doesn’t matter how harmless they are, I’m terrified. So they used to clean the spiders off the tree before I got up there. They’d be like, “Yeah, yeah, we’ve got a spider killer up there.” And they would just lie to me and I’d be like, “Okay.”
Q: How many of your own stunts did you do?
JL: I did a lot of my own stunts but I also had an amazing stunt double who did the falling out of trees and falling down mountains.
Q: We've heard that Amandla Stenberg is a big practical joker. Were you a victim of anything she did?
JL: Yeah. I can't remember. I totally was. Xander [Ludwig] had the brunt of her pranks. She's hilarious. I mean, Josh [Hutcherson] got me a lot.
Q: He said he made you pee your pants.
JL: He's told everyone that one. I thought that it was like a one time thing on Ellen and I was like, “Alright, cool. I know what it feels like to say something and be like oh, gee,” and then it was everywhere. So, thanks, Josh.
Q: Will you retaliate when you guys are back to work again?
JL: Oh, yes. I mean, I kicked him in the head and gave him a concussion, but there's still more.
Q: Why have so many people responded to this story and this character in your opinion?
JL: Because this is the generation that's obsessed with reality television and watching people's lives fall apart while we eat popcorn. This is the new generation that's kind of started this obsession and I'm every bit a part of it. The more tragic it gets the more ratings it gets and the more we watch it the more we love it. We live in the world where in the past and present and possibly future our governments, in certain countries, are controlling their people by keeping them separate and weak and hungry so that they’re not strong enough to fight back. I think that there are a lot of messages about history repeating itself and what happens when something is wrong and you stay quiet, and how we are the new generation. We are the generation that can change things and that can stand up. Also, I think people love following a character like this who's a hero that doesn't mean to be a hero that kind of goes against all odds and fights back when something is wrong and doesn't stay quiet.
Q: Was there one scene that you’re really excited for fans to see?
JL: The Cornucopia scene, at the very beginning because Gary [Ross] does something that was so beautiful and unexpected that really got to me.
Q: Have you heard anything about the X-Men sequel?
JL: I don't know. I mean, if they write me in then I'm in, but I don't even know if there’ll be. Just what everyone else has heard. Just whispers and I haven't heard and official word yet.
