The Final Destination films take great delight in showing how any environment could conspire to kill you if all the right things go wrong. David R. Ellis, director of "The Final Destination", hopes viewers will take the latest film as a warning to be safe.

"I think people need to be more aware in life in general," Ellis said. "It's in all those kinds of situations. If you've got water that's leaking next to an electrical cord, if you've got oil that's spilling someplace where people are going to walk or drive, there's everything in life that you need to be aware of."

The premise of Final Destination is that even if you narrowly escape a disaster, death will still come for you when it's your time. Really though, the deaths at a race track, at an auto body shop and a public pool happen due to carelessness and recklessness.

"Exactly, and most do. Most accidents, whether they're on the freeway and people are talking on their cell phone. A friend of mine's daughter bent down to grab her cell phone that fell and was in a head on. It's all stupid things that happen to people. They're only thinking about the moment instead of the consequence of the moment. So they're thinking, 'I've got to get my phone' instead of 'Dude, I'm on the freeway. I'm on a skinny two lane road and maybe I should pull over and get my phone.' So I think if you want to live long, you've got to think about both how can you be defensive and offensive in situations to protect yourself."

In his own life and family, Ellis has taken extreme steps to protect his loved ones. "I taught my kids how to do backwards 180s in cars and stuff just as defensive driving. I've got my sister's kids staying at our house and all of my kids are old. So I'm looking every second for something that's going to be dangerous for this little two-year-old that's been running around our house for three days. I think being aware of your situations is really good, both in an offensive and a defensive way."

The Final Destination opens Friday.
