Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies - 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,' 'Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol' & More
I’m disappointed to report that I didn’t love Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes sequel “A Game of Shadows.” The first half hour is pretty boring, and although the action picks up pretty heavily toward the middle, Ritchie seems to care more about style than substance in the film. He continues to use Sherlock’s own bullet-time type slow-mo combined with crazy forced perspectives of bullets and shells being shot from guns, which admittedly is pretty darn exciting at times.
What the movie lacks though is the same great banter between Watson and Holmes that was present in the first film. Holmes specifically rambles like a nut with very little substance to his dialogue. “A Game of Shadows” is also missing adequate development of the villain. Professor Moriarty is evil and his competition with Holmes is amusing, however the writers don’t build him up enough to turn the audience against him. My Grade: B-
Hitting theaters this week before the holidays we have the David Fincher adaptation “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” the Tom Cruise action sequel “Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol,” the Steven Spielberg animated outing “The Adventures of Tintin,” the 9/11 drama “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” the alien invasion flick “The Darkest Hour,” the family friendly drama “We Bought a Zoo,” the Angelina Jolie directed Bosnian War film “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” and finally the documentary “Pina.”
MY PICKS FOR THE WEEK: Since I can’t decide on just one, this week my picks are “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol”
