Toronto-based duo The Airplane Boys’ debut mixtape, Where’ve You Been is available for download on their website www.airplaneboys.com and the two artists that make up the group, Beck Motley and Bon Voyage, describe what it all means to them: "Where've You Been is a statement, not a question. We are on a path of self-discovery, and this mixtape speaks to the ride we’ve been on and the lessons we’ve learned, everybody searches for themselves, we just want people to listen and hopefully relate to the journey we’re on. We hope our supporters will find something in our music that makes them feel, without questions."

Beck Motley and Bon Voyage spoke exclusively with Starpulse about their mixtape, who inspires them and what’s up next for The Airplane Boys.

Starpulse: I know your real names are Manny and Jason but you go by ‘Beck Motley’ and ‘Bon Voyage’, how did those names come about?

The Airplane Boys: I went to a college and I did this Improv class for fun and I did a scene and the professor was like that was very “motley” of you and at that time I didn’t know what that word meant, I’d never heard it before and I thought it was very colorful and I thought it was kind of like my personality, the color and the dimension, you know like my personality. My name came about when we were changing our name to ‘The Airplane Boys’ and it basically represented a time when we were going through things and we wanted to leave stuff behind and I was going through a cleaning of my life and he called me when I was at work and he said, “Yo, Bon Voyage” and that represents us you know, going towards the future.

Starpulse: The Airplane Boys is a part of the group Beau Monde- how are the groups similar and how do they differ?

The Airplane Boys: Beau Monde is like the governing body behind the Airplane Boys and our producer and creative director they are behind a lot of our beats- it means a beautiful mind. 1. Beau Monde is the governing body behind The Airplane Boys. Our crew, our fam and brothers. It means beautiful world. We want people to feel like their stepping into this world of art that we created.

Starpulse: Tell me about your mixtape that is out, in particular the song “Gold Ribbons”, I watched the video in which you got to run around the city with some hot chicks- that must have been run to shoot.

The Airplane Boys: “Gold Ribbons” was a fun and memorable shoot. We're lucky to know the people we know in the city that helped us with the shoot. These individuals giving us their time and energy is greatly appreciated. We do our videos w/o any grants or funds. It's all creativity, passion and the energy from us and others that care about the art.

The process for the mixtape 'Where've You Been' was similar. Working with people passionate about our project. They know we're willing to work and with that everything happens for a reason. The relationships and people we've met had a strong contribution to helping us reach where we want at the time creatively. Even without money or resources the vision can do so much. Just imagine when we do have those things haha.

Starpulse: What was it like opening for Snoop Dogg?

The Airplane Boys: It was unreal man, because it was like his song that we actually recorded to when we had a little mike on the computer was “Gin and Juice” so that was actually the very first song. Now fast forward to us taking our career seriously and following our dreams, it’s like unreal. It was a learning process for me and I was really honored and a moment I was very grateful for. And we got to tell him that that was the first song that we recorded.

Starpulse: What other artists inspire you as a musician?

The Airplane Boys: A lot musicians inspire us. We listen to a lot of sounds. From Jamiriquai to Rick Ross to Daft Punk to the XX. To even movie score sound tracks. The list goes on. N.E.R.D, Kanye West, Drake, Kid Cudi, everything we are listening to right now.

Starpulse: Your music is so cutting edge and you gave such a great stage presence, is there anything you do when you prepare for a show that’s different or gets you guys hyped up for the show.

The Airplane Boys: Before we go on stage we always prep the band. Always being grateful and saying a quick prayer. Usually before practices or the day of a show - when we're driving to the venue subconsciously we'd play any N.E.R.D album. Those sounds stick with us.

Starpulse: Just curious, how old are you guys? You seem very young and that’s awesome that you are so successful at a young age.

The Airplane Boys: I’m 65 actually.

Starpulse: You look great for your age!

The Airplane Boys: No, I’m 21 and Manny is 22.

Starpulse: Were you guys childhood friends?

The Airplane Boys: Yeah, we were. We have gone through different groups and a lot of friend and changes but we always had each other and it goes back to the music. It’s a brotherhood, you know?

Starpulse: What was the last thing you Googled?

The Airplane Boys: Probably The Airplane Boys.

Starpulse: its okay, we all Google ourselves.

Starpulse: What was the best concert you have ever been to?

The Airplane Boys: We've been to several concerts. But a concert that really stuck to us was Kanye West's Glow in the Dark Festival. We were more in tune with who we were and what we wanted to do with our music and that concert inspired a lot of our imagination.

Starpulse: Do you think that social media has helped out the music industry? You guys seem very connected with your fans through Facebook and Twitter. Has it helped you in your career?

The Airplane Boys: Yes, because of the times it so happens that everything is connected and music is just being downloaded and it’s just easier to connect there’s no more middle man you have to make that connection through the music and through Facebook and Twitter. And now you can just get an HD camera and shoot things yourself and that’s pretty much what we’re doing we’re just trying to make that connection with the people so we can appreciate our journey. But yes, it has helped a lot.

Starpulse: What’s up next for you guys?

The Airplane Boys: We are working on our 2nd mixtape we are shooting some more videos and sitting in the board room with the Beau Monde crew and we are busy and excited about it and we are going to be doing more shows and more concepts and trying to be more creative and push the boundaries. We will see what happens, we feel confident.
