has been delighting (and annoying) audiences for about 20 years, although in the beginning he was just that guy who did odd voices on "Saturday Night Live
." Despite seeming like just a goof, Sandler quickly proved to be a smart business investor, having written and produced several of his most successful films and creating Happy Madison Productions.
Most of Sandler's films in the past 10 years have been out of his own production company, with a few exceptions. Forbes recently named him one of the highest-paid men
in hollywood. Anyone who writes this actor off as just a silly comedian is seriously underestimating his business tactics...and his talent. Love him or hate him, Sandler has been a part of some very lucrative films and made millions laugh on a regular basis. But can he still rake in the box office mojo for his films after a few critical flops?
There are some who might think he's gone a bit downhill in the past few years. It's true that a few of his films did poorly, such as Little Nicky
, Eight Crazy Nights
, and Spanglish
. Sandler tried out his dramatic muscles in films like Punch-Drunk Love
and Reign Over Me
, although his fame really comes from his silly but entertaining comedies. He's come a long way since "Saturday Night Live."
This weekend his newest comedy, Funny People
, hits the big screens with a fairly large cast of renowned comedians and Judd Apatow
as the writer-director. The movie itself is somewhat a parody of Sandler's life, with him playing a successful comedian who does immature but popular comedy films. He is given less than a year to live, and it changes his entire outlook about the world. It is already getting rave reviews and some buzz about possible Academy Award nominations - even for Sandler himself!

So the question is after all this time, is Sandler still a box office draw? Absolutely. Even though his past few films have not received high reviews or positive feedback, they all did extremely well financially. Click
made over $200 million, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry
(with only a 14 percent approval on Rotten Tomatoes) did over $100 million, and last year's Bedtime Stories
kid flick took in $200 million worldwide. Even Deuce Bigalow European Gigolo
doubled its budget. In the past few years every one of Sandler's projects have surpassed all expectations and won big numbers for Happy Madison. Are they good movies? Not particularly, if the critics have anything to say about it. But clearly there are still large audiences willing to watch Sandler in anything.
"Funny People" also stars big names like Seth Rogen
, Leslie Mann
, Eric Bana
, Jonah Hill
, and Jason Schwartzman
. For any comedy lovers this will probably be the film of the summer to see, and Sandler's role in it is no doubt one of the major draws. Despite bad reviews and questions about his skills as an actor, Sandler is still a box office draw and one of the most successful comedians in Hollywood. So all you naysayers might just have to accept he's here to stay...while the fans laugh and rejoice!
