Alec Baldwin has paid a touching tribute to acclaimed author Tom Clancy following his death on Tuesday (01Oct13).

The writer, who penned classic thrillers including Patriot Games and Rainbow Six, passed away at a hospital in his native Baltimore, Maryland, aged 66.

Many of Clancy's novels were adapted for the big screen, and now Baldwin, who starred in the big screen version of his 1984 book The Hunt for Red October alongside Sean Connery, has reflected on the news of his passing.

A statement released on Wednesday (02Oct13) reads: "Spending time with Tom prior to shooting was the best part of that whole experience for me. Tom was smart, a great story teller and a real gentleman."

Taking to his Twitter.com page, Baldwin added, "Rest in peace the great writer Tom Clancy. A real gentleman of the old school."
