Robert De Niro will replace his late friend James Gandolfini in new TV mini-series Criminal Justice.

The Sopranos star, who died in Italy in June (13), developed the seven-part series and signed on to star. He'll remain a producer posthumously.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that De Niro has agreed to step in for Gandolfini in the U.S. adaptation of Peter Moffatt's acclaimed 2008 BBC drama of the same name.

He'll play a lawyer defending a man accused of murdering a girl in New York.
