A White House event featuring Gloria Estefan and Ricky Martin has been cancelled in the wake of the fatal shootings of 12 people in Washington, D.C. on Monday (16Sep13).
President Barack Obama postponed the Musica Latina event following the mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yards, which also left another 12 people injured. Suspect Aaron Alexis, a former petty officer in the U.S. Navy, was killed during a gunfight with police.
A statement from the White House reads: "In light of today’s tragic events at the Washington Navy Yard and out of respect for the victims and their families, Musica Latina will be postponed to a new date.”
Estefan and Martin were set to perform at the concert, which was scheduled to celebrate America's Hispanic Heritage month, which runs from 15 September to 15 October (13).
After hearing news of the cancellation, Estefan took to Twitter.com to write, "Out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, our show Musica Latina (at) The White House will not take place. Prayers & peace!"
Meanwhile, Martin passed on his condolences to the families of the victims: "Another mass shooting. So sad. My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the victims of the NavyYardShooting."
