Celine Dion's mother tried to stop her falling for manager
Celine Dion's mother attempted to talk her daughter out of falling in love with her manager Rene Angelil when the singer first revealed she had strong feelings for the Svengali.
The Canadian superstar first met Angelil when she was 12 and he was 38 and their friendship and business relationship took a romantic turn when Dion was 19. Although her mother saw it coming, she was not best pleased when her daughter told her she was in love with a man who had been married twice before.
The My Heart Will Go On singer recalls, "It was very difficult for her... When I told her... that I had some really strong feelings for Rene... she tried everything to kill him and make me snap out of it.
"I was very frustrated and mad at first... But she tried to make me understand that this kid tried it (marriage) tried it twice before, he has three children, he's not responsible... (She said), 'You're my daughter, you're my baby and I want the perfect prince of charming for you'.
"And then it was so strong that my whole family was in love with him and she had no choice."
However, Dion admits she would struggle just like her mother did if her son Rene Charles brought a much older woman home: "If I think of him and he comes home with, like, this lady who has five kids and she's 45 and she thinks she knows best... I don't think I'd be able to do it."
