Helen Mirren: 'My husband and I would never would have lasted if we met in our 20s'
Helen Mirren is glad she didn't meet her husband Taylor Hackford until later in life - because they wouldn't have stayed together if the romance began when they were both in their 20s.
The Queen star admits she often wishes she had met her man earlier in life, but he's convinced they were destined to find each other and fall in love when they did.
She tells WENN, "We had the advantage of coming upon each other quite later in life. I said when we got together, 'Oh, why didn't we get together when we were in our 20s; we've missed all that time?' And he said, 'If we got together in our 20s we wouldn't be together now,' and he's absolutely right.
"When we were in our 20s, both of us were busy doing our goals and dreams in terms of our professions, and there wasn't room in either of our lives at that point for that kind of relationship. We were very lucky we met when we did. I think that's part of the success. By then we'd learned that what both of us needed in the relationship was the ability to continue working.
"We also recognised that need in the other person, so, together, we give the other person the freedom, the liberty, the encouragement to go off and do what our profession demanded. We've always given each other complete support and freedom, and that's incredibly important."
And she admits that showering each other with compliments is a big plus: "It's unconditional praise! We get enough criticism, professionally speaking, in the world; we get brick bats thrown at us all the time, so, to each other, we are both fantastic at whatever we do work wise. It doesn't mean we don't have rows, we do - huge ones - but, in terms of work, it's always, 'Darling, that was brilliant!' That's all I want to hear from Taylor and vice versa."
