Director Sofia Coppola has spoken out to defend her new movie The Bling Ring after it was named "trashy" and "inaccurate" by a member of the real-life burglar bunch.

The film was recently bashed on Twitter.com by Alexis Neiers, who served four weeks behind bars for her part in the so-called 'Bling Ring' gang, which broke into the homes of stars including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Orlando Bloom in 2008 and 2009 and snatched more than $3 million (£1.9 million) worth of goods.

In a series of posts, she tweeted, "It's trashy and inaccurate... The truth will come out soon enough and I have no intention of seeing this film."

But Coppola, who premiered the movie at the Cannes Film Festival in France on Thursday (16May13), has shrugged off the criticism, telling BBC News, "It's not a documentary, we made a movie and I'm not too concerned with their reaction."

However, she did admit to purposefully fictionalising some of the details in the movie, such as the suspects' names, explaining, "I didn't want to make those kids more famous than they already are for what they did."
