Multiple marriages are nothing new in Hollywood, but what about just multiple weddings? To the same person even? It may sounds crazy but the renewal of wedding vows has become an increasingly popular trend in Hollywood of late. Are celebrities just so lucky in love that they feel the need to celebrate it again and again? Or is it simply an over the top gesture to dispel those pesky break up rumors? Let’s examine the evidence.

Celebrities who have renewed their vows in the last year include Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, Fergie and Josh Duhamel, Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott and of course, Heidi Klum and Seal. Even real housewife of New York Ramona Singer renewed her marriage in the last year for only the 2nd time in her 17-year marriage.

First there are the couples that make it a tradition. Heidi Klum and Seal have renewed their vows every year since they have been married, so far five times. They make it a family affair each year where they include their four children and re-instate their love for one another on their anniversary. They usually add a unique spin each time so along with the romace is a little humor, in 2009 they renewed their vows in a “white trash” themed ceremony in Malibu, CA. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have also decided to renew their vows every year on their anniversary, possibly to prove they are built to last? The couple married only six weeks after they began dating on Carey’s Bahamian estate in 2008.

Other couples may not make it an annual tradition but rather renew their vows as the mood strikes. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have been married for six years now and decided to renew their vows both in 2008 and 2009 under no unusual circumstances.

On the other end of the spectrum are couples like Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott and Fergie and Josh Duhamel. Both couples chose to renew their vows coincidentally when stories of their troubled unions were rampant in the tabloids. Just weeks after allegations of Josh’s philandering surfaced, Josh Duhamel and Fergie renewed their vows when Josh surprised Fergie in January by whisking her away in a private helicopter to Santa Barbara and planning an elaborate vow renewal. Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott also renewed their vows in 2010 amidst rumors of divorce proceedings. The couple enjoyed a simple ceremony with their children and Tori’s mother, Candy Spelling, while reading the vows they wrote to one another on their original wedding in 2006. Is it also possible that the couple wanted to ensure the public of their relationship?

Whether it’s simply an annual tradition, a rumor deterrent or an actual desire to recommit to one another, celebrity vow renewal is a hot trend in Lala land, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. However as long as the rich and famous continue to entertain us with their make ups and break ups you won’t see me complaining…
