Geeks Out, a gay rights activist group, has called for a boycott of the upcoming Ender's Game film due to statements made by the author of the book, Orson Scott Card.
Card is a member of the National Organization for Marriage, which spends millions of dollars battling same sex marriage laws. He has also made several statements against gay marriage, including a piece in the Mormon Times where he wrote, "Married people attempting to raise children with the hope that they, in turn, will be reproductively successful, have every reason to oppose the normalization of homosexual unions.”
In 1990, Card was in favor of keeping laws in place that made homosexuality illegal. He said the laws must "remain on the books, not to be indiscriminately enforced against anyone who happens to be caught violating them, but to be used when necessary to send a clear message that those who flagrantly violate society's regulation of sexual behavior cannot be permitted to remain as acceptable, equal citizens within that society."
In 2004, Card suggested that homosexuality was the result of abuse: "The dark secret of homosexual society—the one that dares not speak its name—is how many homosexuals first entered into that world through a disturbing seduction or rape or molestation or abuse, and how many of them yearn to get out of the homosexual community and live normally"
In 2008, the author wrote that there would be a revolution if gay marriage laws were passed: "Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn."
Card has written a statement to Entertainment Weekly over the boycott, calling the debate "moot" after the recent Supreme Court ruling. After explaining that the novel has nothing to do with Gay rights, he offered, "With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot. The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state." He then went on to suggest pro gay rights activists need to show tolerance with those who disagreed with them.
Card has been completely absent from press junkets for the film, even at Comic Con where an author of a movie adaptation would be happily accepted.
