Ginny Gardner Joins 'The Goldbergs' For Halloween
Ginny Gardner is coming to stay with The Goldbergs. The actress joins the freshman ABC sitcom tonight in the multi-episode role of Lexy Bloom, and BFTV snagged a few minutes with her to discuss traveling back to the 1980's, if her appearance as Katie Fitzgerald on Glee was as fun as it seemed, and what it's like to be an up-and-coming TV actress.
Her Goldbergs character "is a JC Penney's model in the 80's and she's the most popular girl in high school, naturally," Ginny explained. "She's the cool, popular chick but I still tried to make her likeable."
Lexy is also the apple of Barry Goldberg's eye, as viewers will find out tonight. He's had a crush on her since she lent him a pencil in class, and with Halloween here, he's hoping she'll be his date to a holiday party.
What's been the best part of playing the character so far? "Getting to dress up in the hair and the makeup!" Ginny told us.
It's the most recent TV role for her, after appearances on FOX's Glee, Disney's Lab Rats and The CW's Hart of Dixie. Which of her small-screen parts has she been most proud of so far? "The stuff I did on Glee was really fun. I would say the Glee episode that I did ["Feud"] was so much fun and kind of a cool storyline. I got serenaded by Blake Jenner, which is fun to watch," she said. "And also, I did that Disney show Lab Rats, which is kind of a fun thing."
The fact that she's worked almost exclusively in television is "Just how it's worked out right now," she added, with her first film, Almanac, on the way. "I'd love to do more film, but right now TV's the work that I've been getting. I really enjoy anything."
With only a limited number of credits on her resume so far, Ginny is introducing herself to colleagues and audiences alike. We asked her what she looks for in a role, and if there's anything she's hoping to show us in the future.
"It's really if I can relate to a character and if there's an honesty I think I can bring it. I try to make it fun and a little bit of me," she told us, adding that "I haven't really gotten a chance to do anything too serious yet, or play anything too different from myself. I'd really love the opportunity to play something completely different. I was just actually watching American Horror Story, and to be able to do anything like a witch - or even someone not in high school!"
"It's been a million times harder than I ever would've expected it to be," she said of being a professional actress. "There's a lot of work that goes into it, but it's worth it. I think the successful people are the ones that really stick it out."
But just as there's plenty of hard work involved in her chosen career, there's also been the occasional perk, too. "There's been a couple moments where I've been auditioning against people I've been a fan of, or meeting people who I've been a fan of," she reflected.
"Aaron Paul, from Breaking Bad, that I adore more than life itself, we were shooting at a music festival for something and Aaron was there. He was talking to us like we were completely normal people. He was so excited for us. That's been probably rhe coolest moment in my entire life. Aaron Paul is like my hero."
While she might have missed her chance to guest-star on Breaking Bad, Ginny is bringing her charm and sunny disposition to The Goldbergs now, and we have a hunch that it's not going to be the last we see of her.
You can catch Ginny in The Goldbergs starting tonight on ABC.
