'Project Runway' Recap: Sew Much Pressure

Tim Gunn, Heidi KlumOn last night's episode of "Project Runway," the designers were challenged to create red carpet looks for a very special celeb...Heidi Klum. Ho-hum. Didn't they just dress her a few weeks ago? You can see that result on this month's Marie Claire cover. A real challenge would have been to make the designers create an outfit for Michael Kors...without using black.

During sketch time, Maya mysteriously disappeared for a while. She soon returned with Tim Gunn to announce that she was dropping out of the competition. Drama! Everyone was stunned, but Maya seemed worried about what she would do if she actually made it to Bryant Park. She didn't want that kind of exposure because she felt like she wasn't "ready" as a designer. Bummer. I always liked Maya.

But there was no time to boo-hoo over Maya's departure because it meant that Anthony got to come back! Hooray! This was nearly as exciting as when Chris March got booted and returned in Season 5.

During the initial model fittings, it was revealed that there was also a shake-up in model land: Seth Aaron's model Valeria decided to take a high-paying gig with DKNY. She actually turned it down last week in order to stay, but when they doubled her salary, she couldn't say no. So that meant that Jonathan's old model Cerri got to return! Hooray! This was nearly as exciting as when Anthony returned a few minutes earlier.

I immediately began hoping that Seth Aaron and Cerri would win and Jonathan would be auf'd, because I was still annoyed with him for screwing Cerri over last week. To Cerri's credit, she didn't seem to harbor any ill will toward Jonathan, so maybe I shouldn't have either.

Tim brought Heidi along on the workroom visit, and she had quite a bit of advice for everyone. She thought Seth Aaron's black dress needed more "zing" and suggested that Mila's "simple" garment might not be as good or ambitious as some of the others. She worried that the puffy, ruffled skirt of Jay's dress would make her butt look big, and told Jonathan that his fabric looked like "curtains." The only designers she seemed genuinely impressed with were Emilio and Anthony.

After Heidi left, everyone continued on course except for Jonathan. He ripped his dress apart twice, and finally had to make a third version of it with less than an hour to go.

At the runway show, Heidi introduced the very special guest judge who was hiding in the wings: Jessica Alba. Big whoop. Did she really deserve that much build up?

Since there were only six designers left, there wasn't really a Top 3 or Bottom 3, but it was pretty clear who the winners and losers were.

Winning designs

For the second time this season, two winners were named. Unsurprisingly, they were the two designers who Heidi saw promise in early on in the challenge: Emilio and Anthony. Turned out that Heidi decided to wear Emilio's slinky, strapless, shimmery gold gown for a red carpet event, while Jessica wanted desperately to wear Anthony's breezy, beautiful black and white gown. What a great welcome back gift for Anthony!

As for the remaining four designs, the panel didn't seem to love any of them. But Seth Aaron's "vampire" dress, which everyone agreed was "too safe" and just not Heidi's style, must have been the least offensive, as he was sent off to safety first.

The judges felt that Mila's dress was too simple and ill-fitting. Nina thought it looked like something that one of the "Housewives of New Jersey" would wear. This was the umpteenth dress of Mila's that looked like some sad little number from the '70s, but unlike disco, this woman just won't die. She was sent off to safety once again.

The final two were Jay and Jonathan. Heidi was annoyed that Jay still made his bubble butt dress even after she warned him about it, while all the judges thought Jonathan's dress was too short and looked like it was thrown together at the last minute (which it was). In the end, Jonathan was the one sent packing. So, I guess if he had stuck with Cerri, she would have probably been eliminated this week anyway.

Since I was curious, I watched "Models of the Runway" for the second (and probably last) time in my life. Turned out, Cerri's second chance on the show didn't turn out as well as Anthony's—she was eliminated again. Well, that's a shame, but I just can't force myself to feel too bad for a gorgeous model!

Auf wiedersehen - see you next week!
