'American Idol' Recap: Dexter Roberts Goes Home In A Shocker + Power Rankings

April 18th, 2014 9:49am EDT
'American Idol' Recap: Dexter Roberts Goes Home In A Shocker + P
Well...this is embarrassing. It seems the Power Rankings have become about as useful as one of Keith's comments.

Yes, this season's favorite, Dexter Roberts, went home last night in a result that left me flabbergasted. He was a guy with a guitar. He sang country. He clearly was more popular than Sam Woolf who'd already been voted off previously. How exactly does this guy go home so soon?

It's a mystery that shows this series is getting more unpredictable. Likely spurred by the lack of unified voting base - it's not just tween girls texting, it's likely that weird middle-aged guy with a mo...

'American Idol' Top 7 Recap: Things Start Getting Weird

'American Idol' Top 7 Recap: Things Start Getting Weird
It's time to recap 'American Idol' with a skull-crushing cold and about half-a-bottle of Robitussin in my belly.

Look out. Things are about to get weird. Y'know, like letting rival contestants pick which song each Idol will sing.

Caleb Johnson sang "Family Tree" by Kings of Leon

Keith Said: That was a great choice. It really highlighted your strengths.

J-Lo Said: It's dangerous to put you first in the lineup: Now everybody else has to raise their game.

Harry Said: It sounded like a song that could be on your record.

The Verdict:

Are we completely certain Caleb isn't already in Kings ...

'American Idol' Recap: Malaya Watson Goes Home + Power Rankings

April 11th, 2014 9:35am EDT
Eliminated contestant Malaya Watson
Even at 30 minutes, the results show feels like a waste of time.

Last night, the 'American Idol' results show tried to pack as little as possible into 30 minutes of live television. Spots normally reserved for musical guests and contestant backstories were eschewed in favor of...well...talking. And moving the camera around the stage. And...that's it.

It seems impossible to think that with the results show halved the producers would have trouble filling its running time, but then last night happened. A night where the Ford Commercial was the most entertaining part of the show. A night wher...

'American Idol' Recap: The Top 8 Tackle The 80's

April 10th, 2014 9:45am EDT
Jessica Meuse performs on AMERICAN IDOL
After the save, the top eight got a second crack at America's votes, this time with songs from the eighties.

So who was super-cool and tubular and all the other good eighties' slang? Read on to find out...

Jena Irene sang "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" by Joan Jett

Keith Said: I love the originality you bring to all your performances.

J-Lo Said: It languished a bit in the middle.

Harry Said: I wasn't a fan of the arrangement. It felt very choreographed.

The Verdict:

Jena picks the most excruciating of all worn-out karaoke songs and makes it about as boring and karaoke as she can.

She tries ...

'American Idol' Recap: The Judges Save Sam Woolf + Power Rankings

April 4th, 2014 8:33am EDT
'American Idol' Recap: The Judges Save Sam Woolf + Power Ranking
Last night brought 'American Idol's' now-traditional once-a-season anti-climax when nobody was eliminated from the show.

Poor little Sam Woolf got the lowest vote total, but the judges foolishly exercised their save on him when they should have kept it in their collective pocket in the insane chance that Alex ever end up singing for his life. Sam simply isn't going to win as evidenced by his limited talent and frequent trips to the bottom three. He's not the guitar guy the girls are looking for and the time had come for the judges to just let him amble down his dough-eyed road.

It was alm...

'American Idol' Recap: The Top 8 Audition Again

April 3rd, 2014 9:45am EDT
AMERICAN IDOL XIII: Top 8
Last night, 'American Idol' went back to where it started from with a new theme: contestants singing their initial audition songs again for the judges.

So who passed the test? Read on to find out...

Pink Hair sang "Blue-Eyed Lie" by Jessica Meuse

Keith Said: That was a great start to the show, but you need to work on getting your full body into it.

J-Lo Said: I thought it was really perfect. I love it.

Harry Said: It reminded me of Cher or Nancy Sinatra from the 70s.

The Verdict:

I definitely had to Google the original artist for this song. Never heard of her. A little research finds...

'American Idol' Recap: Majesty Rose Goes Home + Power Rankings

March 28th, 2014 7:53am EDT
American Idol
After so many years of filler, 'American Idol' finally showed us some mercy last night with a return to the more appropriately lenghted half-hour results show.

Instead of a show filled with Ford Commercials, re-airing the previous night's episode, and Ryan moving the contestants around the stage, we got a tight little 30 minutes with the suspense of the eliminations as its showcase and a performance from Janelle Monae to boot.

With 30 minutes, 'Idol' isn't able to waste any time, eliminating the drag and pain of having to sit through an hour to see the four minutes we really care about. N...

'American Idol' Recap: The Top 9 Rock Out As They Sing With The Band

March 27th, 2014 9:55am EDT
Jena Irene performs on AMERICAN IDOL
'American Idol' brought the musicians out from the shadows last night and put them right next to the contestants in a night called 'I'm with the Band'.

It's an interesting concept. At least it would be if it didn't make any difference whatsoever where the band was located. Moving them five feet forward doesn't exactly make for a whole new 'Idol'.

Though it did result in some pretty good performances...

Alex Preston sang "Don't Speak" by No Doubt

Keith Said: I wish you'd give it a little more edge.

J-Lo Said: That was the soft version of the song. It kind of sucked the energy out of i...

'American Idol Results: MK Goes Home + Power Rankings
In showbiz, it's all about confidence.

MK Nobilette had one of the most unique and wonderful voices ever on this show. A deep near-lady-baritone was something out of New Wave heaven with remarkable purity. Vocally, she had the chops of a winner.

But singing only gets you so far.

Clearly out of her element in front of a massive audience, MK never seemed comfortable onstage. She was hesitant and nearly bashful as she ambled around the proscenium like a baby kitten first greeting light.

That mess of borderline stage fright rendered her vocal talents moot as she was unable to truly harness ...

'American Idol' Recap: The Top Ten Takes On The Top Ten

MK Nobillette peforms on AMERICAN IDOL
Last night, it was the Idols turn to get modern as they took on top ten hits released since 2010?

So did any of the top ten give a performance worthy of the charts? Read on to find out...

MK Nobilette sang "Perfect" by Pink

Keith Said: I think you need to work on opening up and owning it more.

J-Lo Said: At the beginning of the song was great, but when you got thrown you didn't recover.

Harry Said: I did not think that was one of your stronger performances.

The Verdict:

An odd change for MK here: For once she doesn't see petrified to take the stage, but her newfound confidence appea...
