'Rizzoli & Isles' Review: 'Judge, Jury And Executioner'
As Rizzoli & Isles winds down to the final few episodes of its fourth season, the cases seem to get more elaborate and the murderer less easily guessed from the start. This week, our heroines were confronted with two mysteries to solve: one where a judge is poisoned to death by Ritalin and one that deals with Angela Rizzoli’s (Lorraine Bracco) sudden increase in baked good sales.
Episodes like this one, where the victim is someone known by the BPD, always seem to be the ones that I like best. The victim turns out to be one Judge Kathleen Harper (A’da Allison Woolfolk), a judge whom Det Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) has worked with a number of times. She championed first time offenders, sending them to a minimum security prison for their sentences. Apparently, this is what leads to her death.
Amongst the serious case-related scenes were several funny quips from the paint in the courthouse being “institutional beige” (typical Rizzoli) to Dr. Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander) not making the mock trial team due to being “too chatty.” On the family notes, Angela’s money issues are uncovered when an envelope arrives to Maura’s mailbox from the IRS. Wanting to help, Jane opens it to find out the lump sum that is owed. Frankie (Jordan Bridges) seems to be the only one who has it right, Mama didn’t tell them, so leave it alone. My hat goes off to Tommy Rizzoli (Colin Egglesfield) for not judging and ultimately using the money gained from his wrongful injury case to pay his mama back for all the years of looking after his troublesome behind.
Ultimately, it was a lawyer who was involved in defending the prison Judge Harper was making a case against who was responsible for her death. She had been taking Ritalin for narcolepsy thus giving the killer an easy murder weapon: an overdose of Ritalin. Smart detective work, excellent ME skills and a few missteps is all it took to put a killer away. What will these cops do without Frost to be their computer hack next season? The loss of Lee Thompson Young is still at the front of my mind every time I see him on the screen. He will be sorely missed.
Tune in next week as Jane faces two unanswered murders and we find out the answer to “Casey may go back to Afghanistan unless…”
