This Willie "the Lion" Smith LP first appeared in 1957 on Urania, and was reissued not long after his death in 1973 on the short-lived Jazz Kings label. Although Smith is billed as being solo on six selections, Pops Foster's bass, Sidney Gross' guitar and Arthur Trappier's drums are generally audible accompanying him, with Smith is in good form. The remaining four tracks feature Smith in a Dixieland setting with trumpet Henry Goodwin, trombonist George Stevenson, and clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Cecil Scott joining him, along with the rhythm section. Highlights include Goodwin's spirited muted solo on "Fidgety Feet" and a raucous take of Lil Hardin Armstrong's "Struttin' With Some Barbecue." Although this isn't by far Smith's best date as a leader, the music is quite enjoyable and worth picking up. Ken Dryden, All Music Guide Tracks:
