The ten tracks that comprise 1977's Tina Sings were, in fact, recorded in 1972 as Charles worked as a member of the group Wild Honey, and thus not only predate her hit making years under the aegis of producer Biddu, they also bear little resemblance to anything she would go on to create. Indeed, only four of the songs here were even released at the time - "He's my Sugar", "People Of the Universe", "Baby Don't you Know Anymore" and "Joe" all appeared on readily forgotten singles during 1972-73. One more, "Can't Dance to that Music you're Playing" then sneaked out under Charles' own name following her 1976 "I Love to Love (But my Baby Just Loves to Dance)" breakthrough -- and, once again, was ignored. For all that, Tina Sings is a surprisingly enjoyable, if poppishly lightweight album -- imagine a cross between early 70s singalong confection Pickettywitch and Charles' own future within 5000 Volts, and you'll be close. Charles' vocals are considerably less gimmicky than Biddu would portray them, while Wild Honey's obvious need for acceptance saw them playing hide and seek with a variety of musical styles as they searched for one that might break them out of obscurity. None did, of course, but with hindsight, the band seems disparate as opposed to desperate, and even appear incredibly far-sighted as they push towards a disco-danceable sound several years before such noises infiltrated the mainstream. There are moments, too, when the sound moves towards more contemporary glam pop inflected directions, an ambition that must certainly have come as a surprise to any latter day Charles fans who picked this up in search of the next "Love Bug".
