The Shins
New Slang
Release Date: 2001
Label: Sub Pop Records

The Shins' New Slang 7" could be a lost single from a brilliant, obscure '60s psych-folk band while still sounding far ahead of its time. The A-side, "New Slang," is a mid-tempo, strummy folk tune with a real catch-on falsetto melody. "Sphagnum Esplanade" is downright otherworldly pop, echoing with faraway vocals and the true-of-heart feeling of the soundtrack to the tender kiss scene in a vintage summer love movie. The Shins' only contemporaries might be the avant-rain pop of Oregon's thebrotheregg. So, put a wreath of flowers in your hair and frolic to the auditory dream sequence of truly mind-melting pop music. Charles Spano, All Music Guide
