The Devil Dogs
No Requests Tonight
Release Date: 1997 09 23
Label: Sympathy For The Record Industry

A posthumously released live album by the '90s kings of New York's garage-trash underground, No Requests Tonight is the Devil Dogs at their primeval best. The sound is bootleg quality, but frankly, that doesn't really matter much, since fidelity was never quite the point, and the gig absolutely smokes from start to finish. The set list covers a batch of 11 highlights that seems like it might have been picked randomly from the group's extensive catalog of pop-punk classics, plus a reverent version of Sonny Bono's petulant anthem "Laugh At Me" for good measure. Another highlight is singer Andy Gortler's charmingly abusive and often hilarious stage patter; on a good night, he could work the crowd like David Johansen. And this set captures a good night.
