The Bluegrass Alliance immediately conjures up a question in the listener's mind: Hasn't that name been heard before? Well, if one is old enough, he or she may be remembering a progressive bluegrass group that disbanded in 1978. This version of the Bluegrass Alliance formed in 1998 with the daring idea of reviving the spirit of the original group. It will only take the listener seven or eight minutes of listening to "Friend of the Devil," "Ready for the Times to Get Better," and "Sea of Heartbreak" to realize that these lads and lone lass have come pretty darn close in their goal. The instrumental work and harmonies are tight, but both would be in vain without great song choices. La Rita Buchanan's lead vocals on "Ready for the Times to Get Better" and "If You're Ever in Oklahoma" are superb, proving herself a fine interpreter of non-bluegrass material. Tom Hicks' nice lead vocal on "Sea of Heartbreak" receives lively backup from Barry Palmer's banjo, Chuck Nation's mandolin, and Hoot Hester's fiddles, while the instrumental "Panhandle Rag" gives all of these players plenty of room to show off. Re-Alliance holds together as a coherent, lively effort by a group that puts a lot of soul into their bluegrass. This disc will appeal to fans of progressive and traditional bluegrass, making the band a double threat to the contemporary scene. Ronnie D. Lankford Jr., All Music Guide Tracks:
