The Black Gang

Leave it to Mike Watt, one of the most influential bass guitarists, to slap his way through another ensemble of experimental punk-funk without sounding too avant-garde. Black Gang takes a Minutemen-era Watt into a looser structure of quirky jazz that reflects the genre bending of John Zorn and Captain Beefhart. A metallic accompaniment of twangy guitar leads and start-stop rhythms chop along throughout "This Is a Prayer." Further innovation on this EP includes the guitar instrumental of "A Carrot Is as Close as a Rabbit Gets to a Diamond," topped off by the spoken word track "Tour Spiels." As each individual member of the Black Gang recounts a tale from their 1998 U.S. tour, they make a suitable ending for a record that breaks the predictability barrier.
