Teddy Wilson
Shades of Blue
Release Date: 2004
Label: Solo Art

Swing pianist Teddy Wilson's playing barely changed during his final five decades from how he sounded in 1935, so there was always a certain amount of predictable excellence in his performances. However, sometimes he was inspired and more enthusiastic than usual. This live set from England has Wilson and a couple British sidemen playing before an exuberant and appreciative crowd, and the audience's reaction clearly inspires Wilson. There are no surprises in the song selection but Wilson is heard constantly stretching himself a bit, playing with more passion and intensity than he usually displayed. It is an excellent outing overall and one of his better late-period recordings. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
